BLOOD DONOR

Just as many rivers flow into the ocean and become indistinguishable, our blood flows into a great sea of compassion and is mixed with others’ blood for the health and well-being of the sick and injured. The practice of blood donation encourages nonattachment, compassion, and peace, as we live into the reality of interdependence.

Blood Donation Meditation

Relax into your chair. Close your eyes and attend to your breath. Loosen your hands. Drop your shoulders. Notice the sounds and sensations around you.

Breathe in the nurse’s voice. Breathe out her voice. Breathe in the needle’s jab. Breathe out the needle’s jab. Breathe in the sensation of blood leaving your body. Breathe out the sensation of blood leaving your body. Let all sensations and thoughts float across your mind as you breathe, releasing attachment.

As you breathe, let your out-going breath carry this intention:

May this blood bring another happiness.
May this blood ease another’s suffering.

As you breathe in, let your breath carry this intention:

May all beings experience happiness.
May all beings experience an end to suffering.
