What Makes Blood Amazing?
In advance, print out enough info sheets (linked below) for each to student to have one. Each sheet has a different information about the amazing qualities of blood.
Begin by asking students what they already know about blood. Write their answers on the board.
Distribute the sheets evenly among the students.
Ask students to show the number on top of their sheet with their fingers raised up above their heads
Ask everyone to pair up with a different number. Once they’ve paired up invite them to share their special information with one another.
After a few minutes, rotate by asking them to pair with the number they haven’t seen yet. Have students discuss their sheets with their new partners.
Ask students to resume their seats. Then point back to the board and ask: What else do you know about blood now? Encourage students to share what they’ve learned!
DISCUSSION: NOAH and the ARK
Ask students if they’re aware of any disasters, natural or manmade, local or international.
Ask students if they know how blood donations help people who have been hurt during disasters.
Now ask them if they can recall any disasters that their ancestors experienced. If no one suggests it, remind them of the flood (although there are many, other good answers).
Lead them in a discussion of how Noah’s action in the present ensured that life would be preserved into the future, and how blood donation is a kind of present-day ark. By doing the good work of giving blood, we can ensure that, when disaster strike, life will be preserved!
